Break: Typeface created in 2025
Break is a sans-serif stencil typeface designed to break the system. I made this typeface by manipulating the structure of DIN, a typeface associated with authority, structure, and institutional control. Break intentionally disrupts its uniformity through deliberate, stencil-like gaps carved into each letterform.
Every character is intentionally asymmetrical, carrying extra weight either along the bottom edge or the left side. Designed to feel defiant, Break visually embodies resistance and structural disruption.
The concept behind Break is rooted in examining the corruption and fundamental flaws within the incarceration system. By physically interrupting the clean, regulated shapes of DIN, the typeface becomes a visual metaphor for breaking apart structures that uphold inequity.
As a stencil font, Break maintains functionality while embodying fragmentation. Its form balances legibility with tension, reflecting the push and pull between systems of control and movements for change. Through this design, the typeface transforms an institutional aesthetic into a tool for critique, expression, and liberation-focused visual communication.
"I submit that an individual who breaks a law that conscience tells him is unjust, and who willingly accepts the penalty of imprisonment in order to arouse the conscience of the community over its injustice, is in reality expressing the highest respect for law."
- Dr Martin Luther King Jr
